George Skedgell
Mr. George Skedgell, age 81, of Nashville, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 5th, 2016.
George was born in Hastings, MI on October 10, 1934, the son of the late George and Angeline (Bleam) Skedgell.
He attended local schools graduating from Nashville High School in 1953. After graduating, George worked the family dairy farm, but was drafted in 1957 to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. George served as an Executive Chef for almost two years and was honorably discharged in 1958. After returning home, George resumed working the family farm and enjoyed spending time outdoors hunting and was also a regular bowler. Often after an evening of bowling, the teams would spend time socializing, and it was during one of these evenings in the early 1970's that he was introduced to Elizabeth "Jane" Burdick. Needing a square dancing partner, Jane invited George to join her at local square dancing events. Soon after, the couple traveled with other members of their club to a national square dancing convention in Anaheim, California. Unable to find someone to handle the daily milking of his cattle, and wanting to go on this California trip with Jane so badly, George decided to sell all of his dairy cattle. It was on this trip that George and Jane grew closer and on September 18, 1976, the couple was married in Hastings, MI.
After they where married, George continued farming and also began working as a custodian in the Maple Valley School system. As their family grew, George left farming and the family moved to a bigger home in town. George's smile, familiar laugh, and sweet demeanor made him a favorite among the students and faculty at Fuller Street Elementary, where he worked for 24 years before retiring in 2003.
After retiring, George enjoyed woodworking and gardening, and staying home being close to family. George was a simple man, a gentle soul, and loved his family more than anything.
George is survived by his beloved wife Elizabeth "Jane"; two daughters, Kimberly Keim and Karen Ghiban; two sons, Michael Skedgell and Daniel Skedgell; his sister, Dorothy (Fred) Corkins; and brother, Gerald (Joyce) Skedgell; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Wayne and Donald Skedgell.
Funeral Services will be held at The Daniels Funeral Home, Nashville, MI, at 1 PM on Saturday, January 9th, with chaplain Tod Clark officiating.
The family will receive visitors two hours prior to the funeral service beginning Saturday at 11 AM until funeral time at The Daniels Funeral Home in Nashville.
