John M. Hartwell

Mr. John M. Hartwell, age 82, of Vermontville passed away Wednesday, July 8th, 2015 at Pennock Hospital, in Hastings, MI.

John was born in Vermontville, MI on December 2, 1932, the son of the late Sumner E. and Velma (Brumm) Hartwell. He was raised on the families Kalamo Township farm which was establish in 1906. John continued operating the family farming until retiring in the mid 1980's

He was the widower of Marjorie (Elliston) Hartwell. The couple was married on May 25, 1978 and made their home together on the Vermontville farm.

John was employed at E.W. Bliss for over 25 years, as well as The Eaton County Road Commission, and Nashville Sand & Gravel throughout his early working career.


Along with his family, John enjoyed spending time at the family cabin near Fife Lake. During the winter months they enjoyed snowmobiling with friends and as the weather progressed to summer, mushroom hunting was a favorite up north pastime. He also enjoyed fishing, and spending time in the fall deer hunting on the farm.

John is survived by his two sons Johnny (Cheryl) Hartwell, Jody (Beanie) Hartwell, three step sons Jack Elliston, Brian (Jeri) Elliston, Chuck Elliston, his sister, Phyllis (Don) Burrows 12 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren

He was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie in 2014.

Graveside service will be held on Saturday August 1, 2015 at 11:00 am at Hillside Cemetery in Kalamo, MI.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can me made to the Wish Upon A Star - Nashville.
