Obituary for Barbie VanPortfliet

Barbara "Barbie" VanPortfliet, age 66, of Nashville, MI (formerly of Onsted, MI) passed away on July 8, 2023, at her home in Castleton Township.

Barbie was born in Adrian, MI on July 30, 1956, the daughter of the late Olive and Dale Wooden.

She was raised in Onsted, MI and attended and graduated from Onsted High School in 1975. In 1976 Barbie began working at Fisher Body in Tecumseh, MI where she worked faithfully until 1989 when the plant closed. Shortly thereafter, Barbie began working at Napoleon Livestock & Western Store and then J&J Western Store. She finished out her working days as a para-professional with the Onsted Public Schools until retiring in 2016.

After completing her education, she married Mr. Billy VanPortfliet on October 29, 1977. The couple made their home in Manitou Beach, MI where they raised their children. Barbie and Billy remained in the original homestead for over 40 years before relocating to the Nashville area to be closer to family.

Barbie had a lifelong passion for the western way of life, from rodeo to working in the western store. During her younger years, she was an active competitor in rodeo. As her family grew, so did the love of rodeo, and her children followed her lead, with both of her daughters perfecting their individual skills in every area of the sport. The family’s love of rodeo allowed Barbie to watch her children and grandchildren participate all over the country. While working at both western stores, you could hear countless stories of how Barbie would help customers, young and old, with their western fashion. It was no secret she had a passion for fashion – and that fashion could come from the western store, box store, the local Goodwill, or a garage sale! No matter where it was Barbie LOVED to shop and find that bargain!

She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years Billy, their children Brandy (Cal) Casey, Brooke (Justin) Cargill, her sister Jane Wiley, and 4 grandchildren, Trey and Kyanne Casey and Mercedes and Beau Cargill. Her brother Mike Wooden and brother-in-law Dave Wiley preceded her in death.

A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023, at The Mill Event Center in Onsted, MI conveniently located at 230 North Main Street Onsted, MI 49265.

The family will receive visitors from 3-5 PM with a memorial service at 5 PM at The Mill Event Center in Onsted, MI.

Guests are encouraged to remain at The Mill to continue celebrating Barbie’s life with refreshments and fellowship.
